SS 584 stipulates cloud computing security practices and controls that can be adopted by cloud users and Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) to strengthen their governance, enhance their reliability and resilience in cloud environment.

SS 584 certification is applicable to three service models:  

  • Infrastructure such as data centre: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS),  

  • Platform that sits on top of the infrastructure: Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), 

  • Enterprise facing application: Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). 

SS 584 certification is mandatory for CSPs participating in Government tenders imposed by the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA). SS 584 has three different tiers of cloud security, Tier 1 being the base level and Tier 3 being the most stringent.

SS 584 Tiers

Designed for non-business critical data and systems with basic security control that address security risks and threats targeting low-impact information systems such as website hosting public information.

Designed for organizations that use cloud services to protect business or personal information and run critical data and systems in a moderate impact information system and have more stringent security controls such as personally identifiable information, credit card data, CRM data, emails. 

Designed for companies with specific needs and more stringent security requirements where industry specific regulations may also be applicable to supplement and address security risks and threats in a high impact information system using cloud services such as financial or medical records.
