Agriculture has progressed immensely over the years to fulfil the world’s demand for food. However, agriculture industry is facing impending threats brought about by climate change, degradation of arable land, depletion of natural resources and competing land use due to urbanisation. Aside to that, with the rapid increase in population growth, the demand for food is predicted to outweigh the agriculture supply if the agriculture practices remain status quo.
With this, the Enterprise Singapore (ESG) together with the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has developed SS 661:2020 Specification for Clean and Green Urban Farms – Agriculture to provide local vegetable farms/ producers with guidelines on how to grow vegetables sustainably and are free from pesticides. The main aim of SS 661 standard is to minimize contaminants in the food production process as well as implementing sustainable practices on resource and waste management.
SS 661 provides guidelines on replacing chemical pesticides with physical, natural and cultural controls to protect their produce from pests and pathogens such as use of ultraviolet lights, insect pheromones to trap pests and companion planting to create a biodiverse habitat to attract natural enemies of plant pests, etc. It also provides guidelines on crop management systems to optimize the use of water, energy and fertilizers in farming activities while minimizing waste.
